Nana
A laundress's daughter with no voice and no training is put on at the Variétés as a blonde Venus wearing very little, and the house discovers within one act that it does not care whether she can sing. Bankers, counts and schoolboys rearrange their finances around her while she spends without counting and keeps a failed actor she is fond of. Zola placed the courtesan at the centre of the Second Empire deliberately, as the point where its money went.
