The Nightingale (Yosele Solovey)
A cantor's son in a Ukrainian shtetl has a voice that fills the synagogue and leaves nobody in the women's gallery dry-eyed, and a travelling choirmaster talks him into leaving home to sing for money. Contracts, applause and an innkeeper's daughter in Bessarabia pull against the girl he grew up next door to. Composed in 1889 against the cheap Yiddish potboilers its author spent that decade attacking in print.
