Farewell My Concubine
Two boys beaten through a Peking opera apprenticeship in the 1920s grow into the most famous pairing of their generation, one always the king and one always the concubine, and the roles refuse to stay on the stage. Their fifty years run through the Japanese occupation, the Nationalist retreat and the Cultural Revolution, with a courtesan from the house on Blossom Lane as the third point of the triangle. The first Chinese film awarded the Palme d'Or, and the high point of the Fifth Generation.
