Senso
In Austrian-occupied Venice in 1866, as a protest against the occupiers erupts at La Fenice, Countess Livia Serpieri begins an affair with Franz Mahler, a cynical lieutenant of the garrison, and lets it consume her loyalty to her Risorgimento cousin's cause. Its source, Camillo Boito's 1883 novella of the same name, is not held here. The film marks Visconti's turn from neorealism to operatic Technicolor melodrama, the line his The Leopard would complete.
