The Leopard

Luchino Visconti · 1963 CE · Film · Italian · Contemporary

Garibaldi's thousand land in Sicily in 1860, and Don Fabrizio, Prince of Salina, watches his order begin to close while his nephew Tancredi rides off with the redshirts and comes back courting Angelica, the daughter of a rich and vulgar mayor. A rigged plebiscite, a senate seat declined, and a family summer at Donnafugata give way to a ball in a Palermo palace that fills the last third of the running time. Visconti, an aristocrat and a Communist, filmed Lampedusa in the real palaces with the real dust, and disowned the shortened English release until a restoration undid it.
