Jalsaghar
A Bengal zamindar whose lands the river has been eating for a generation keeps on in a crumbling palace with an old retainer and a fortune already spent, while next door the moneylender's son raises a new house on trade money and starts holding recitals in it. What the landlord still owns is the chandeliered hall where his family hosted the great singers of the province, and the conviction that commanding such an evening outranks paying for one. Bandyopadhyay came from a Birbhum landowning family watching its own class go under, and made feudal connoisseurship the measure at once of its refinement and of its unfitness to last.
