The Duchess of Amalfi's Steward

Lope de Vega · 1618 CE · Play · Spanish · Renaissance

A widowed duchess of Amalfi, forbidden by her brothers to marry again, chooses her steward Antonio and weds him in secret, and the household closes around a marriage it must not admit. Children arrive, and with them the difficulty of keeping any of it hidden. Lope worked from the same Bandello novella that reached England through Painter, which is why the plot rhymes with Webster's.
