Punishment Without Revenge

Lope de Vega · 1631 CE · Play · Spanish · Renaissance

The Duke of Ferrara marries by proxy to secure an heir and sends his illegitimate son Federico to fetch the young bride, whose coach overturns at a river crossing before either knows who the other is. Casandra finds a husband who keeps his old habits and a stepson her own age. Lope took the story from Bandello's novella of the Este court and made the father's problem the whole tragedy.
