The Foolish Lady
Lope de Vega · 1613 CE · Play · Spanish · Renaissance
Two sisters in Madrid are courted for opposite reasons: Nise for her learning and her wit, Finea for the far larger dowry that compensates for her dullness. Finea falls for one of the men circling the house, and the feeling begins to sharpen a mind everyone had written off as beyond teaching. Lope's clearest argument that love is an education, staged as a marriage-plot comedy.
