In 1876 the leading Polish actress Maryna Zalezowska abandons the Warsaw stage and sails to California with her husband, a few friends and a plan for a utopian commune at Anaheim. When the colony falters she turns instead to conquering the English-language theatre. Based on the life of Helena Modjeska, it won the 2000 National Book Award for Fiction.
