Dolemite Is My Name
A middle-aged record-store clerk in early-1970s Los Angeles, turned down by every club and label in town, builds a foul-mouthed rhyming hustler out of routines he buys off the men outside the shop, presses the party albums himself, and then mortgages everything to put the character on film. Eddie Murphy plays Rudy Ray Moore straight rather than as a joke, and the production reconstructs a shoot the industry would not fund. Taken from Moore's life rather than from any published account, it reads as a defence of unembarrassed outsider filmmaking.
