A Star Is Born
A band singer working a benefit at the Shrine Auditorium covers for a drunk star who wanders into her number, and he wakes the next morning determined to get her a screen test. She is renamed, made over and built up by the studio while his own contract is quietly allowed to lapse. Warners cut thirty minutes after the premiere and lost the trims; Judy Garland's return after four years off the screen holds it together.
