Limelight

Charles Chaplin · 1952 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

In London in 1914 a music-hall comedian nobody will book carries an unconscious dancer up from a gas-filled room, puts her in his own bed, and talks her out of wanting to die while she recovers the use of her legs. She gets into a ballet company; he cannot hold an audience, and the composer who admires her is nearer her age. Chaplin sailed for the premiere and had his re-entry permit revoked, so America barely saw it.
