Monsieur Verdoux

Charles Chaplin · 1947 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

A Paris bank clerk of thirty years' standing is let go in the Depression and takes up a second profession: courting, marrying and liquidating provincial widows to keep an invalid wife and a son in a house outside the city. He runs several identities at once, tests a poison that leaves no trace, and cannot finish off one woman who keeps surviving him. Chaplin dropped the tramp for a murderer and saw it picketed and withdrawn.
