Tevye the Dairyman
A dairyman hauling cheese to the summer colonies outside Kyiv takes to telling his troubles to a writer he keeps meeting on the road, arguing with God and misquoting scripture as he goes. Each monologue turns on a daughter and the husband she has settled on without him: a penniless tailor, a revolutionary, a rich man's son, a gentile. The pieces ran separately in the Yiddish press between 1894 and 1916 and were never gathered into a book.
