The Belly of Paris

Émile Zola · 1873 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

A political prisoner escaped from Cayenne walks back into Paris at dawn among the carts feeding the market halls, and is taken in by the younger brother he has not seen since the coup, now married to a formidable charcutière. Given a clerkship in the fish pavilion, he drifts toward a circle of talkers planning an insurrection while the shopkeepers study a thin man who will not eat. The third Rougon-Macquart novel, and the one that made Les Halles the cycle's image of appetite as government.
