Strangers on a Train
Patricia Highsmith · 1950 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary
A young architect travelling south to settle a divorce falls into conversation with a wealthy drifter who proposes that each of them kill the other's inconvenient person, leaving neither with a motive. The architect takes it for drunken talk and gets off the train; his companion does not. Highsmith's first book set the pattern of everything after it, in which guilt passes between two men like an infection.
