Os Sertões
A wandering preacher gathers the drought-ruined of the Bahian backlands into a settlement at Canudos that refuses the new republic's authority, and four military expeditions are sent against it. Several hundred pages on the geology, drought and vegetation of the sertão and on the people that land produced come before the campaign narrative, which the author covered as a newspaper correspondent attached to the final column. Da Cunha went out expecting a monarchist conspiracy and a degenerate remnant, and the prose records his case turning over in front of him; it has been the founding document of Brazilian national self-examination ever since.
