Little House on the Prairie
A family leaves the Wisconsin woods by covered wagon, fords a swollen creek and stakes a claim on open Kansas grassland where Pa builds a cabin and digs a well by hand. Fever comes through the household, a prairie fire runs at the door, and the Osage whose country this is ride past within earshot. Wilder's third instalment is her most read and most contested, for a settler's-eye account later readers weigh against the dispossession it records.
