The Long Winter

Laura Ingalls Wilder · 1940 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

An old man walks into the store in October to say that seven months of hard weather are coming, and the first blizzard arrives before the hay is in. Trains stop for good in January, the coal and the kerosene run out, and the town lives on seed wheat ground in a coffee mill and hay twisted into sticks for the stove. Between storms two young men take a sled out onto the open prairie after a homesteader rumoured to be holding grain.
