The Beet Queen
Two children are left at the Argus fairground in 1932 when their mother goes up with a stunt pilot and does not come back down; the girl walks to her aunt's butcher shop and stays forty years, the boy climbs onto a freight train. Around them a sugar-beet town assembles a family out of leftovers — a jealous cousin, a Chippewa woman who keeps the shop's books, and the daughter all of them fight over. Erdrich's second novel, set in the white town at the edge of the reservation her first one worked.
