Kindred
On her twenty-sixth birthday, unpacking boxes in a new house in Los Angeles, Dana is taken by a wave of nausea and finds herself on a Maryland riverbank in 1815, hauling a drowning white boy out of the water. She is pulled back whenever the boy's life is in danger, stays longer on the plantation each time, and returns to her own century only when her own life is threatened. Butler called it a grim fantasy rather than science fiction, and it has not been out of print since.
