The Book of Negroes
Lawrence Hill · 2007 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary
Aminata Diallo, abducted as a child from her West African village in the 1750s, is taken to a South Carolina indigo plantation and later in New York, and writes down her life as an old woman in London. The title refers to the British ledger of Black Loyalists evacuated from New York in 1783, in which she is a recorded name. It won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Book.
