Typee

Herman Melville · 1846 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Victorian

Sick of a brutal captain and short rations, two sailors desert their whaler in the Marquesas, and a lamed leg and a wrong valley put them among the Typee, whom neighbouring tribes call cannibals. Months pass in ease, bathing and feasting and a girl named Fayaway, the guest never certain whether he is honoured or held. Melville's first book was his most popular; its preference for the islanders over the missionaries caused the scandal.
