The Mysterious Island

Jules Verne · 1875 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

Five Union prisoners escape the siege of Richmond in a storm-blown observation balloon and come down on an uncharted Pacific volcanic island with a dog, a watch and one grain of wheat. Led by an engineer who can make pottery, nitroglycerine and a telegraph line out of what the ground holds, they build a colony, and keep finding that something has quietly intervened on their behalf. Verne's answer to Defoe, with knowledge in place of providence.
