Journey to the Center of the Earth

Jules Verne · 1864 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

A Hamburg mineralogy professor buys a runic Icelandic manuscript and finds a coded slip inside it claiming a route to the earth's centre through a volcanic crater. He drags his reluctant nephew and an Icelandic guide down the shaft, and the descent opens onto a lit cavern with a sea in it, forests of giant mushrooms and animals the fossil record says are finished. The model for every hollow-earth story after it.
