A Trip to the Moon

Georges Méliès · 1902 CE · Film · French · Modernist

A society of Paris astronomers builds a bullet-shaped capsule, has it fired from a giant cannon, and lands in the eye of the man in the moon, where the Selenites burst into puffs of smoke at the touch of an umbrella. Méliès composed every shot as a theatrical tableau, painting his own sets and running the substitution tricks he had learned as a stage conjuror. The most widely pirated of early narrative cinema.
