King Solomon's Mines

H. Rider Haggard · 1885 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

An elephant hunter is hired by an English baronet and a retired naval officer to find the baronet's brother, lost somewhere beyond the Kalahari while looking for the diamond mines of Solomon. Carrying a map a dying Portuguese drew in his own blood three centuries earlier, and taking with them a silent Zulu who asked to come, they cross the desert and the mountains into a kingdom held by a usurper and an ancient witch-finder. Haggard wrote it on a bet after reading Treasure Island; it invented the lost-world adventure and carries the whole imperial imagination of the 1880s with it.
