The Hobbit
Thirteen dwarves and a wizard let themselves into a comfortable hobbit's hole and engage him as burglar for an expedition to a mountain held by the dragon that took their kingdom. The road east runs through trolls, goblin tunnels, a riddle game in the dark with a creature who has mislaid a ring, wood-elves, spiders and a river of empty barrels. Tolkien wrote it out of the philology and northern legend he taught.
