The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

L. Frank Baum · 1900 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Victorian

A cyclone carries a Kansas farmhouse off with Dorothy and her dog inside and sets it down in a country of Munchkins, on top of a witch whose silver shoes the girl inherits. Sent along a road of yellow brick to ask the ruler of the Emerald City for a way home, she picks up a scarecrow who wants brains, a tin woodman who wants a heart, and a lion who wants courage, each already possessing what he begs for. Baum promised in his preface a wonder tale with the heartaches left out, and gave American children the first fairy country they could claim as native ground.
