Treasure Island

R. L. Stevenson · 1883 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

An innkeeper's son opens the sea chest of a dead lodger who had been paying him to watch for a seafaring man with one leg, and finds a chart marked with three crosses. A squire fits out a schooner and hires a one-legged cook with a parrot, who assembles most of the crew himself and knows more about the chart than anyone aft suspects. Stevenson drew the map first, for his stepson, and nearly every pirate in English writing since comes out of it.
