Weir of Hermiston

R. L. Stevenson · 1896 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

Adam Weir, Lord Justice-Clerk, sends men to the gallows in broad Scots and enjoys the work; his son sits through one hanging, says in public what he thinks of it, and is exiled to the family lands in the moorland parish of Hermiston. There he meets a girl in a churchyard on a Sunday, and two women both called Kirstie — the aunt who keeps his house and the niece who has no intention of being kept — take opposite views of what is happening. Stevenson dictated the last of it in Samoa on the afternoon he died, and it breaks off mid-sentence.
