Northern Lights

Philip Pullman · 1995 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

A girl running wild through the kitchens and roofs of an Oxford college, in a world where each person's soul walks beside them as a talking animal, hides in a wardrobe and hears the Master try to poison her uncle. Children are vanishing from the canal towns, the Gyptians are gathering, and she goes north with a truth-telling instrument nobody has taught her to read. Pullman drew his title and epigraph from Milton.
