A Wizard of Earthsea

Ursula K. Le Guin · 1968 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

A goatherd on Gont with a gift for calling weather passes from a village witch to a silent mage to the school on Roke, where boys are taught the true names by which things can be commanded. Stung into showing his power in front of a rival, he tears something nameless out of the dark, and it follows him from island to island. Le Guin's magic works by naming and by cost, and her archipelago is deliberately not white.
