The Tombs of Atuan

Ursula K. Le Guin · 1971 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

At five a girl is taken from her parents, her name given back to the dark, and installed as the reborn priestess of the Nameless Ones worshipped in an undertomb where no light may be carried. She grows up learning the maze beneath the temple by touch alone, until a thief comes down into it holding a staff that shines. The second Earthsea book turns the first inside out by handing the story to the keeper of the dark.
