The Peony Pavilion
Du Liniang, kept indoors over the classics by a prefect father, falls asleep in the family garden and meets there a young scholar who does not exist in her waking life. She wastes for him, paints her own likeness before she dies, and is buried beneath the plum tree, where a traveler of that name later takes lodging. Fifty-five scenes of kunqu that Chinese readers have treated for four centuries as the definitive argument that feeling outranks propriety.
