The Romance of the Western Chamber

Wang Shifu · c. 1300 CE · Play · Chinese · Medieval

A student travelling to the examinations stops at a monastery, sees the daughter of a chief minister's widow, and when bandits besiege the place he saves the household in exchange for her hand — a promise the mother withdraws the moment the danger passes. Her maid Hongniang carries poems over the wall by moonlight and argues the lovers' case back to the mother in the mother's own moral language. Twenty-one acts where Yuan convention allows four, banned repeatedly as licentious, it is the most influential love story on the Chinese stage.
