A New York produce wholesaler who nearly drowned as a boy off Cape Cod goes back, falls in again, and is carried to the surface by the same creature; days later she walks naked out of the harbour at Liberty Island and comes looking for him. She learns English from television in an afternoon while a marine scientist tries to prove what she is. Howard's hit launched Touchstone and made Tom Hanks a leading man.
