Beauty and the Beast

Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont · c. 1756 CE · Folktale · French · Enlightenment

A merchant ruined at sea takes one rose from an empty palace's garden and is told the theft will cost him his life unless a daughter comes in his place; the youngest goes, and dines each night with a monstrous host who asks the same question and receives the same refusal. Beaumont cut Villeneuve's sprawling novella of 1740 down to schoolroom length and gave the story the shape it has kept. The tale type's oldest recorded form is the Cupid and Psyche of Apuleius, which supplies the palace, the invisible service, and the envious sisters.
