Beauty and the Beast

Jean Cocteau · 1946 CE · Film · French · Contemporary

A ruined merchant sheltering overnight in a castle where arms grow out of the walls holding candelabra picks one rose from the garden for his youngest daughter, and is told he must die for it unless a daughter comes in his place. Belle goes, is met at supper each evening by the Beast with the same question, and is given a glove that carries her between the two houses and a mirror that shows whatever she asks to see. Cocteau shot it in a France still short of film stock and electricity, with Henri Alekan on the camera, and opened it with a written plea that the audience believe as children do.
