The Golden Pot
A student in Dresden overturns an apple-seller's basket on Ascension Day, is cursed for it, and then hears three snakes with gold-green eyes singing in an elder tree by the Elbe. Copying manuscripts for an archivist who is also a salamander, he has to choose between the archivist's serpent daughter and a schoolmaster's daughter who intends to see him made a court councillor. Hoffmann called it a fairy tale of modern times, and it is the founding text of the Romantic double world where Dresden and Atlantis share an address.
