The Divan of Hafez

Hafez · c. 1390 CE · Poem · Persian · Medieval

Some five hundred ghazals out of Shiraz in which the same figures return in fixed positions - the wine seller's boy, the ruined tavern, the preacher whose piety is a costume, the beloved whose glance is a snare - and the closing couplet turns each time to name the author himself. The vocabulary is Sufi and the manner is worldly, and readers have argued for six centuries over which of the two the wine belongs to. Kept in Iranian households beside the Qur'an and opened at random for divination, and the book Goethe answered in the West-Eastern Divan.
