Canzoniere
Three hundred and sixty-six poems, most of them sonnets, on a woman first seen in a church at Avignon on a Good Friday and then loved for twenty-one years living and another decade dead. The speaker circles a small set of images, laurel, ice burning, a name buried inside ordinary words, and reproaches himself for making an idol of her while going on doing it. The sequence that handed Europe the sonnet cycle, the unreachable beloved and three centuries of imitators working through its catalogue of contradictions.
