The Conference of the Birds

Farid ud-Din Attar · c. 1177 CE · Poem · Persian · Medieval

The birds of the world assemble to find themselves a king and are told that one exists, the Simurgh, beyond seven valleys of hardship. The excuses come first - the nightingale cannot leave his rose, the parrot fears for his feathers - and the hoopoe answers each of them with a story. The Sufi quest-poem, where the road is the whole of the argument.
