The Radiance of the King

Camara Laye · 1954 CE · Novel · West African · Contemporary

Clarence, a European put ashore and ruined at cards inside a week, decides the king must have use for a white man and joins a crowd at an audience he cannot get near. A beggar takes charge of him and starts south with two boys who may not be the same two each morning, through a forest whose smell keeps changing, to a village where he is given a hut and a woman and is never told what he was exchanged for. Kafka's shape run the other way, with the European as the one who cannot read the country he is in, and the novel on which Laye's standing outside Guinea now mainly rests.
