The Gulistan
Eight chapters of short prose anecdotes, each capped with a verse, on the conduct of kings, the manners of dervishes, the virtue of contentment and the uses of silence: a beggar who outwits a sultan, a father whose advice is ignored, a shipwrecked man taken for a saint. Saadi frames them as flowers carried back from a real garden by a traveler who has been to Kashgar and Damascus. Memorized by schoolchildren across the Persian-speaking world for seven centuries, it was among the first Persian works Europe translated, and its lines on the sons of Adam hang at the United Nations.
