Mademoiselle de Scudéri
Paris in the 1680s, with the poison trials still running: men are stabbed in the street on their way to give jewellery to a mistress, and the jewels are gone by morning. The elderly poet Madeleine de Scudéry, who once made a light remark to the king about the lovers of Paris, wakes to find a casket of them left at her door and follows the workmanship back to the finest goldsmith in the city. One of the earliest detective stories in any language, and the one that put the artist's own compulsion at the centre of the crime.
