Death and the Compass

Jorge Luis Borges · 1942 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Modernist

A rabbi is found stabbed in a hotel room on the eve of a Talmudic congress, a half-typed line about the first letter of the Name still in his machine. Erik Lönnrot rejects the police chief's guess at a bungled robbery and reads the killing as the first term of a series; when more arrive a month apart he plots them on a map and finds a shape. A detective story built to reason its way out of the genre.
