The South
Juan Dahlmann, a Buenos Aires librarian descended from a German pastor on one side and a frontier soldier on the other, comes home with a battered Thousand and One Nights and gashes his forehead on a badly lit casement. Blood poisoning puts him through a hospital ward, after which he is sent to convalesce at the family ranch and boards a slow train south. Borges warned that it admits more than one reading.
