Funes the Memorious

Jorge Luis Borges · 1942 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Modernist

A writer sets down what he recalls of Ireneo Funes, a farm boy in a Uruguayan town who could give the exact time without a watch. Thrown from a horse and left paralysed, Funes wakes with a memory that loses nothing — every leaf of every tree he has seen, and every occasion of seeing it — and begins inventing number systems large enough to hold it. A few pages arguing that thought requires forgetting.
